The expression is probably affected by local ocean chemistry and the evolutionary history of the sand dollars in question.

A colleague of mine at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco is a specialist in sand dollars and might be better at answering your questions: His name is Rich Mooi and he can be contacted here:
http://research.calacademy.org/izg/staff

good luck!ChrisMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11784970666468925633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3433304117507034540.post-10740464781378973142012-12-15T14:01:22.371-08:002012-12-15T14:01:22.371-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Ancel Katshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15432591971810410250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3433304117507034540.post-66546104930751969952012-12-15T13:49:01.619-08:002012-12-15T13:49:01.619-08:00Hi,

Bit hard to explain without a pic, but I'm sure you know what I mean. How can that be explained? Do the teeth have the same function as lunules, for instance to cope with strong riptides?
